RADCON II : Radically Defying the Laws of Nature

by CBLDF Volunteer Marc Deering

The show featured a martial arts demonstration by a local school of Kung-Fu children, a belly dancing demonstration, and a classical folk guitarist playing songs at the end of the day.

Now, I’ve been to a few comic conventions in my day, not a lot mind you, but a few, and RadCon II (April 10 in Hampton, VA) was special. Not just for the diversity of guests, but also for the entertainment throughout the day. But I’ll get to that later.

I was proud to be able to help out the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund by volunteering to run their booth while their small staff hit two other cons (that same weekend!) CBLDF premiums were in high demand throughout the day, bringing in more than $200 for the Fund. My partner in crime, Dennis Browne, was on point for the CBLDF’s many t-shirts, while I sold art prints and even a whole box of Bone Chocolate Bars to one woman! Not bad, considering how small this particular con was. As I said the guests were very diverse and here’s a list of who was there:

Colleen Doran was especially cheerful throughout the day. As ever, she was a joy to be around as fans bombarded her table with questions and requests for her original art.

Charles Vess was not to be missed either. With two beautiful framed prints behind him, his table thronged and he was always gracious to talk and sign autographs.

David Napoliello was there also and his new line of books that are coming from Peregrine Entertainment look to very exciting.

K.C. Carlson was also a big draw for many of the locals trying to break into the comics industry. Looking over to his table many times, I noticed numerous people talking with him for extended periods of time about their work. He answered each and everyone’s questions and gave tips for breaking in.

And, last but not least, Chris Sprouse, a man doesn’t know how good he really is. From the minute he walked through the door he had people around him. They were either talking to him or looking for an original sketch of Supreme or the brand new Tom Strong. Chris fulfilled every autograph and sketch requested of him, and was the day’s big draw.

But back to the entertainment. Now, like I said, I’ve been to a few comic cons in my day and every one is different. RadCon, however, took the cake. The show featured a martial arts demonstration by a local school of Kung-Fu children in training, followed by a belly dancing demonstration, and to finish it off, a classical folk guitarist playing songs at the end of the day. It certainly made things more interesting.

Over all this was a great little con that everyone enjoyed. Everyone made a little money and had a generally good time talking to the fans and professionals alike. All thanks go out to Colleen Doran and Ken Talton for running a great show. I will be looking forward to this one next year and hopefully everyone in the area will be too. As always the CBLDF will be there to help out in any way they can!
